FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you service hot water systems?

Yes, we service a range of products, including both electric hot water systems and solar hot water systems. If your hot water system isn’t performing well, it may be time for a new element or thermostat. Call Col Groves today to arrange an inspection.

  • Why should I have RCD safety switches installed in my home?

An RCD safety switch is designed to protect against the risks of electrocution and fire caused by earth faults. A safety switch detects the loss of power from the circuit and cuts the supply of electricity in as little as 30 milliseconds – 0.003 seconds. The purpose of RCDs is to protect yourself from electrocution.

  • How often should I have my smoke alarms checked and tested?

It is recommended that your smoke alarms are checked and maintained annually by a qualified electrician.

  • Can I do any electrical work myself?

The short answer is no. Without the right training, equipment and knowledge, it’s very dangerous to take the chance when you are dealing with anything to do with electricity. If you make a small mistake, the results can be devastating, from damaging or losing your home to even losing your own life.

  • What are the benefits of LED lighting?

Upgrading to LED lighting could potentially save you up to 80% on your electricity bills. LED light not only uses a lot less electricity but also provides better light output, and each globe could potentially last up to 30,000 hours of use.

  • How much will I save per year upgrading to LED?

You could potentially save up to 80% on your lighting costs by swapping over to LED.

  • What is a level 2 electrician?

A level 2 electrician is competent and accredited to do installations, maintenance and repair work on overhead and underground service lines that pass through the electrical supply network and the customer’s (home or business) property. This includes disconnecting and reconnecting home and business properties from the electrical network, installing electric meters and installing service fuses for new solar systems. Due to the heightened risk of this type of electrical work, not all electricians are able to do this.

  • How much will level 2 electrical services cost me?

Dependent upon the scale and scope of the works required will determine the cost. Col Groves Electrics can provide you with a free quote to establish how we can assist. To receive a quote, please call us on (02) 6686 0148 or send us an email: info@colgroveselec.com.

  • Why do I need a level 2 electrician?

Licensed electricians with level 2 certification are qualified to provide electrical services above and beyond basic electrical services. Level 2 electricians can deal with metering, overhead and underground services not only within the house but also electrical services between the street and your property.

  • How often should I have my solar panels tested and maintained?

Whilst this is not a mandatory requirement, it is highly recommended by the Clean Energy Council and Clean Energy Regulator that your PV system is annually inspected, cleaned, tested and maintained where appropriate: https://www.cleanenergycouncil.org.au/consumers/maintenance-and-warranties
